Little Luxuries have become a Tik Tok sensation, thanks to the “Treat Yourself” trend, which the Genz’s take quite seriously and the retailers are happy to oblige. Retailers, recognizing this trend, strategically place affordable treats like lip balm and candies at the counter to introduce a touch of luxury feeling at an affordable price. Retail giants like TARGET recently joined the movement by introducing a curated section called "Affordable Joy," offering self-care cosmetic products.


The Resurgence of the Lipstick Effect in 2024


The Lipstick Effect is firmly embedded in history as it emerges as a recurring phenomenon after the periods of economic crises. This economic phenomenon was first recorded in the Great Depression and had reappeared at the 2008 financial debacle. As per predictions history is about to repeat itself, characterised by high costs, a weak job market, and a slow rate of growth. The forthcoming year, 2024, portends a time when retailers are poised to tighten their

belts in response to these impending challenges. “Lipstick Economy 2.0” is on the cards according to the economists. Affordable luxuries such as lipsticks, flowers, chocolates, perfumes and pastries are likely to witness a tremendous demand.This affordability aspect makes these vices attractive during times of economic uncertainty and still allows for some retail therapy without a big dent in the pocket. 


Natalia Bambiza, an NPD analyst, reported a 48% boost in lip makeup sale­s in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the preceding year. Eve­n though the "lipstick effect" is se­en as unconventional in traditional economic circles, NPD Group's fresh data shows a 48% uptick in sale­s of lipstick and similar lip beauty goods. This outpaces the sale­s growth of other beauty items by a significant margin.
