“Where words fail, music speaks”

Since the beginning of written history, music has been a crucial element of human civilization. It has been the means to portray, convey and express feelings and emotions that were otherwise hard to put in words and has played a vital role in the development of cultures and societies all over the globe. With the evolution of civilization over time, music native to them evolved as well. From the symphonies to Beethoven to the new Taylor Swift album, music has come a long way and has changed radically from what it was centuries ago. In fact, music and the music industry is so dynamic and culturally influenced, the music you hear today is probably even very different from what it was five years ago. Various new genres and subgenres of music emerge every single year, and, over the decades, with each artist's individual style and sound, the industry transforms - one song at a time. This allows for a lot of experimentation in music, with musicians having the freedom to explore uncharted territories and do what has never been done before to create something wonderful and new that not only affects the present but may also play an important role in the future when it comes to serving as the base for the genius of other musicians. This experimentation is not only fueled by the creativity of the musician but also affected by the socio-economic environment and culture at the time. And all these factors are exactly what contributed to the birth of the youngest genre of music — EDM. With the advent of the technological era in the late 1900s came many inventive and originative applications of technology, one of which was the creation and production of music. Artists such as Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk kept experimenting with music made with electronic sounds and rhythms which incorporated components of pop, funk, and disco to make tracks for dance clubs in the 1970s and 1980s, which is where electronic dance music (EDM) got its start. Early EDM was extremely experimental in nature, and as artists tried to push the limits of what was possible with electronic music, a vast diversity of musical styles and sounds was developed during this experimental phase. Despite being the most recent major music genre to exist, EDM quickly gathered a sizable and loyal fan base. Its popularity caused a stir in the fields of music and electronics and upended conventional notions of what counts as music. It's EDM's distinctiveness and contrast from other music genres that drew the public into the music and contributed to its enormous popularity. It was distinguished from conventional music by its fast-paced, energetic beats that were intended to encourage dancing, other than its obvious difference in the method of modern production, this is what set it apart from other era-popular genres like hip-hop or R&B, which frequently featured a slower, more laid-back pace. Music is a reflection of the day and age it was made in and the sheer variety of subgenres that EDM encompasses is evidence of its adaptability, versatility, and ability to change and tailor to new influences and trends throughout time. Some of the most well-known subgenres are bass, techno, and house, each of which has its own unique style and sound. EDM's bass music subgenre is distinguished by its robust basslines and focuses on low-end frequencies. It is renowned for its aggressive and powerful sound and spans a variety of musical forms, including dubstep, trap, and drum and bass. Notable artists in this genre include Skrillex, Zomboy, Snails, and Seven Lions. The subgenre of techno had its beginnings in Detroit in the 1980s. It is distinguished by its repetitive beats and futuristic tones and is frequently connected to underground dance and club culture. Techno music is distinguished by its energizing and captivating sound and places a heavy emphasis on melody and rhythm. Some prominent DJs in this genre are Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Daft Punk, and The Chemical Brothers. The house genre got its start in Chicago in the 1980s. It is characterized by a soulful vocal performance with a 4/4 pace and is strongly associated with the beginnings of dance and club culture. House music was influenced by its energetic and upbeat vibe with a heavy emphasis on rhythm and melody. Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Tiesto, and Armin van Buuren are a few artists who helped the house genre reach the popularity it is at today. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, EDM developed and expanded further, giving rise to even more new subgenres including trance, dubstep, and electro-house. EDM concerts and festivals started becoming more well-known and gained popularity at this time as the genre started to be linked to liberalism, open-mindedness, and progressivism, making it a significant part of youth culture and the global soundscape. The EDM community is a close-knit and enthusiastic network of individuals who care deeply about the genre. Festivals and events play an important role in bringing this community together to share their enthusiasm for music and culture. The EDM community is also renowned for its feeling of harmony and inclusivity, and events offer a venue for people from various backgrounds to interact and connect over their shared passion for EDM. Every fan has a favorite concert on their calendar, and many will travel far and wide to attend events like Tomorrowland, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Ultra Music Festival concerts that often take place in large venues, such as clubs, arenas, and festivals, and are characterized by their high-energy atmosphere, spectacular and stunning light shows, and a lot of immersive technology, with multiple stadiums having DJs perform their music. Attending an EDM concert is truly unforgettable and touches the crowd on a variety of levels. An EDM festival has the capacity to leave fans with enduring memories and feelings, whether it's due to their emotional connection to the music, the fervor and enthusiasm of the crowd, or their sense of belonging. In conclusion, EDM continues to be a significant and influential genre in the music industry and has played a key role in the soundscape of youth culture. With a shared passion for dance music and a dedication to using music to improve the world, the EDM community is a lovely and diverse group of individuals. Whether you're a lifelong fan or just discovering the genre, there's always a place for you in the EDM community.
